"Our industry is faced with significant challenges; among them the water supply situation in California, the manual labor needed for harvesting, and the environmental sustainability. As an industry we need to continue building partnerships, consensus, and push for policy that addresses these areas. Certainly an immigration reform is long overdue and without it we stand to lose much production to regions outside of the US and this will result in higher prices for fruits and vegetables at the retail level. In the environmental sustainability aspect, at CHEP we have been working in this area for a long time through mandatory re-forestation and we have clear quantifiable environmental benefits with the CHEP program versus other platforms or shipping methods. It is exciting to see countries like Costa Rica who are developing projects for companies to eventually reach neutrality as it relates to the carbon footprint impact. We see CHEP as part of that solution."
