Raised by his father who worked in the foodservice industry, Mike Spinazzola was exposed to the excitement of the agricultural business at an early age. His education and career path was influenced by this early exposure and led him to where he is today. Mike is the President and COO of Diversified Restaurant Systems, Inc. (DRS), which is a food consulting and marketing company specializing in the procurement functions as they relate to the foodservice industry. Most notably, Mike is responsible for produce procurement for the 24,000 North American SUBWAY restaurants.
Mike began his course in the food industry when he was in college. In 1983, while attending Arizona State University, Mike worked part-time for Maggio′s, Inc., who, at that time, was one of the largest shippers of carrots. As part of the sales team, Mike quickly became addicted to the fast paced perishable market. Comparable to the stock market, Mike liked the rush of trading commodities, as well as the first hand look at where the trade begins––in the fields. The exposure at Maggio′s helped Mike make a decision to change his major to Agricultural Business so that he could focus his studies more specifically on the perishable industries.
After graduating for Arizona State in 1985, Mike sought to broaden his education of business practices in general and went to work in another industry. Although he gained a wealth of knowledge regarding business processes, he was anxious to get back into fresh foods. In 1989, in partnership with his father, Mike began his career at Diversified Restaurant Systems, Inc. DRS is contracted by companies to negotiate and procure produce and other food items for many organizations. Serving as the company′s President and COO, Mike oversees all operations and transactions.
