PMAEF awards Nucci Scholarship for Culinary Innovation to student chefs
Newark, Del. – Fourteen future culinary leaders have been awarded the Nucci Scholarship for Culinary Innovation by the Produce Marketing Association Education Foundation (PMAEF). Student chefs from Johnson & Wales University and the Culinary Institute of American (CIA) will participate in PMA's 2007 Foodservice Conference & Exposition, the only event dedicated to fresh produce in foodservice, to be held July 13-15, in Monterey, California.
Additionally, six of the students will assist Chef Anthony Bourdain and Chef Walter Scheib as sous chefs Sunday, July 15, 2007 during a demonstration moderated by educator and consultant Chef Robert Danhi.
"The Nucci Scholarship for Culinary Innovation provides leading culinary students and faculty with the opportunity to form professional ties to the produce industry while simultaneously learning from foodservice professionals how to best incorporate produce on the menu," said Gina Nucci, director of food service marketing, Mann Packing Company, Inc. "This is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from the best of both industries."
Recipients from Johnson & Wales University include: Lucy Colavincenzo of Beaver, PA; Araminta David of Denver, CO; Nicolas Jones of Aventura, FL; Douglas Kellner of Gaithersburg, MD; Kimberly Maloomian of Needham, MA; Desmond Smith of Columbus, GA; and Julie Southern of Plantation, FL.
Recipients from the CIA include: Ben Burger of Atlanta, GA; Jocelyn Laporte of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; Tim Nolt of New Holland, PA; Sean Reynolds of Trabuco Canyon, CA; Tom Sullivan of Hollidaysburg, PA; Carlos Villanueva of Tampa, FL; and Justin Weathers of Micanopy, FL. Two faculty members from each school will accompany the students to the Foodservice Conference & Expo.
Created in 2005 to honor industry leader Joe Nucci of Mann Packing Company and former PMA secretary-treasurer, the scholarship connects culinary students with foodservice and produce professionals. The program, now in its second year, provides students and faculty with a unique opportunity to learn about produce from produce and foodservice professionals. Each culinary student will be partnered with a produce industry professional who will serve as an industry advisor throughout the conference.
The PMA Foodservice Conference & Exposition will be held Friday through Sunday, July 13 – 15, in Monterey, California. The three-day conference will highlight the latest culinary innovations and foodservice trends while facilitating networking opportunities with business leaders throughout the supply chain.
The advanced registration deadline is Friday, July 6, 2007. Participants may also register on-site. For more information about the 2007 PMA Foodservice Conference & Exposition, visit www.pma.com/foodservice.
